GA-H87N-WIFI in Streacom FC8 EVO
A few notes on fitting this motherboard to the FC8 EVO.
(a) the nanoPSU fits under the heat-pipes and only 3 heat pipes will fit (not 4). I’ve fitted a 65W CPU which Streacom says will be fine with 3 heat pipes. The alternative is to fit a 24-pin ATX extension cable.
(b) Plug all connectors into the motherboard before fitting in the case, as the heat-pipes and case make some of the connectors hard to fit.
(c) I used the AD-7640S DVD Drive. The mounting screws for this drive must be only just holding. Any tighter and the drive distorts and doesn’t load. Alignment isn’t easy and I also had to slacken the mounting plate screws a little so that the DVDs eject cleanly. Getting the eject mechanism working is also fiddly. Overall, this part of the design/build is not so good. Might go for the Blu-ray drive if I build another one.
(d) So far the CPU hasn’t overheated, but the case does get very warm!
Thanks for your review and it’s good to hear your build went well on the whole! If you want to, we would recommend fitting the fourth heatpipe (the one nearest the front of the PC) by bending it very slightly so that it clears the nanoPSU. It’s optional when using a 65W PSU though, as you say. It’s good that your chassis is getting hot - that proves that the heat transfer process is working efficiently!
Works out the box.
The motherboard works well and was easy to set up. A few nervy moments installing the CPU but all went well.
The level of service from Quiet PC is truly excellent. I enter to built a silent, low energy PC. Andy Ford offered great support whilst developing the spec. I would heartily recommend using Quiet PC as they offer great value at reasonable cost.
“It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
- John Ruskin
I have no commercial interest in the company. I’m just a satisfied customer.
